Laboratory of behavioral neurogenomics was established at the Institute of Ecological Physiology, the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences, in March 1970 under the direction of N.K. Popova, M.D. to study the central mechanisms of behavior and natural adaptations. After one year as a result of the Institute reorganization the Laboratory was transferred to the Institute of Cytology and Genetics, the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences (now Institute of Cytology and Genetics SB RAS). Over the past years the name of the Laboratory has been changed twice. The models and the methods used were also modified and the molecular genetic aspects of research were considerably increased, but the basic direction – the study of the role of neurotransmitters in the brain regulation of normal and pathological behavior remained unchanged. At the moment, the Laboratory of behavioral neurogenomics is a laboratory of international level, combining molecular genetic, neurochemical and pharmacological approaches to study different forms of behavior (aggression, depression, anxiety, catalepsy) on the original genetic models, including models developed in the Laboratory.

Founder of the Laboratory,
Professor Nina K. Popova,
